Heritage Auctions’s upcoming Winter Luxury Accessories auction will feature some particularly rare and unusual items, including two vintage Hermes replica bags emblazoned with paintings by the New York-based artist Max Brownawell.

Taking place on February 2 and 3, lots in the upcoming auction include the customised ebene negonda leather and toile Garden Party MM bag with palladium hardware, pictured here; as well as a 28-centimetre black box calf leather and toile retourne Kelly bag with gold hardware that dates back to around 1981, and features a striking painting of a tiger on the front.

Brownawell began training in classical oil painting at the age of 6, and began experimenting with painting on Hermes replica handbags last year. So far, he has decorated eight handbags with his bold motifs, with three more in the works.

“I was first inspired by antique Tibetan carpets featuring tiger motifs. Many of my works are inspired by these extremely creative and varied depictions of tiger skins from late-19th-century Tibet, where these skins were believed to protect those who wore them during meditation. By reworking these motifs into designs that fit onto the canvas of the Hermes bags outlet, my tigers are given back to their original purpose: protection. They’re protecting the owner when she’s carrying the bag, and of course protecting the bag itself,” explains Brownawell, who is also senior specialist, luxury accessories, at Heritage Auctions.
